Let’s just start this off with a disclaimer. I am writing this post because this is the way I personally feel comfortable wearing festive makeup. If you like to do things a different way then that’s completely ok with me and I actually encourage you to do it! Be you baby, always and in all ways. But personally when I google “Fourth of July Makeup” for inspiration and I see things like red white and blue flag eyes, star spangled lips, and star stickers, I’m not inspired. Go ahead and look at the google results for that and come back. There are a few more subtle things but over all it’s just not for me. It doesn’t feel adult (and regardless of whether you are an actual adult you may feel the same. I felt like I was 30 when I was 10) and it leave’s me a bit discouraged because I’m like ok…guess I’ll just be a grinch then.
I know I can’t be alone in this, especially since a friend who is a dude and doesn’t even wear makeup brought it up to me. If he notices this discrepancy in makeup inspiration then it must be a big gap. The good new is you can wear fourth of July makeup, still fit your personal style and not have to be a grinch! I made a list of tips that are helpful for me, and I gathered a few makeup looks that I think fit the bill for some visual inspiration.
The best part is you can really apply these tips to any holiday look.
- Choose slight variations on the classic colors associated with the holiday in question. For Fourth of July looks I like to go with more berry toned reds or if I’m using blue I go for a deep, deep navy that’s almost black. They still look festive but they come off as less obvious because you could just as easily use those on a regular basis. Maybe you didn’t even do it on purpose, you’re just instinctively festive down to your core.
- Avoid the literal. If you want to do the subtle, grown up, cool kid version of a festive look then it’s usually best to avoid really literal things like flag or stars. If you like those things I ain’t hating but that’s just not the type of look we’re talking about today. I think the key for me is subtlety and literal interpretations of symbols are rarely subtle.
- Try something edgy but still understated with your festive colors. Maybe a navy blue lip with little to no eye makeup. Perhaps simply replace your black winged liner with a burgundy one. It unexpected, but not necessarily calling a ton of attention to itself.
- When in doubt choose a very classic look that happens to include some festive color. A pin up look with a red lip is festive but in my opinion, still undeniably cool. Or perhaps a classic smokey eye with some navy blue or a pop of gold shimmer.
- When in doubt add a little glitter. If all else fails, and you just want to wear your basic every day look whatever that may be, strategic placement of glitter is always festive. A little hint of silver or gold over your lid, maybe a dash on the inner corner of your eye, even layered over your liner and BOOM. You’re the goddamn life of the party and you still maintained your usual aesthetic for the most part.
You can take these tips separately or combine them up…. or tell me to shove it, paint your face like a flag and roll yourself in star shaped glitter. Get it girl.
Here are some looks I think make sense with these tips though, in case you’re on the hunt for some Fourth of July makeup visual inspo. They are all looks I’ve featured on my Instagram so if you dig them don’t forget to follow me there because I post makeup photos every day ::coughshamelesscrosspromotioncough::
