The Simplest Chapped Lip Remedy – Layering Your Lip Balm

Ayoooo! I’m back from vacation you guys!  There was sun, there was sand, there were drinks, I fell face first off a paddle board into the ocean! It was a great time.  But one slightly less pleasant thing happened.  I sunburned the bejesus out of my lips. Even after prattling on about making sure you use SPF on your lips, I failed to follow my own advice.  I cooked them up like a freshly fried fish, man.  It was bad.  I woke up with them literally swollen to twice their size.

What happens when you burn your lips half to death you ask? Well, as I mentioned they swell up like a blow up doll, but when that goes away they’re basically just chapped AF.  Which was unpleasant, but it lead me to write this post because I had been kicking the idea around for a while and now it seems pretty appropriate because I’m the one in need of a chapped lip remedy.

They actually don’t look that bad in the photo, but trust your girl it has been a rough few days.  Get it? Rough? Chapped? Ba-dum-chhh!

Now, I’m sure there are a million answers to the chapped lip question out there, but my chapped lip remedy is super simple, and super effective.  It’s effective for healing lips that are already chapped, but ALSO for maintaining your lips daily.  I do this almost every night (unless I’m feeling ultra lazy) and in spite of my chronic liquid lipstick habit I have pretty un-chapped lips, barring any vacation related injuries.  That’s pretty impressive if I do say so myself.

HERE’S THE TRICK:

Layer your lip balms.

Sounds pretty simple right?  Well there is a tiny bit more to it than that.  You need to choose one lip balm that penetrates and treats the lips and one that coats them with a thick protective barrier.

You apply the thinner one that treats the lips first (Something that heals like Chapstick medicated or the favorite that I will list for you below) and then a nice thick protective layer over the top that will hold it in place. Think along the lines of lanolin based products, or balms meant to stay on your lips all night while you sleep.  I recommend doing this every night before bed, but you can also apply it during the day if you don’t mind walking around with a fair amount of product on your lips.

As far as products, many things will work but personally I have some favorites…

For the thinner, treatment based first layer:

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment.  This stuff is also the best for prepping your lips before makeup. It’s a beauty junkie cult favorite for a reason.

And this one may look familiar to you because I raved about it a long time ago.  Well, I meant it because I still use it every single night.  This stuff is so thick that it will lock anything you layer under it in place and you will still feel it on your lips in the morning.

I simply slather my lips in the C.O. Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm after I have patted on some of the Lucas’ Papaw and let it marinate.

If you follow those simple steps, I’m pretty confident that this will be your favorite chapped lip remedy.  It’s so easy and you wake up with them feeling so much more hydrated and plump.  Give it a try and let me know how it goes, and let me know if you have any favorite balms that you absolutely swear by!
