Pores man, why do we need them? Why can’t someone fuze my skin shut and make it into a glorious smooth ice rink of human flesh? Obviously I know why we can’t do that biologically, but skin texture is an emotional topic for me and I’m going to need you to allow me to express myself freely, ok? Thanks. Pore primer, aka primer that is designed to minimize the appearance of pores, does a very good job of blurring out the pores and making them less visible. But to be honest, it always looks more effective before you place foundation over it. At least 68.3% of it’s pore blurring goodness is negated by applying other products on top. I made that number up but I stand by it. #science
I’ve done a post in the past about using different primers for different areas of the face, which I still do most of the time, but in response to this 68.3% loss of effectiveness that I’ve noticed, I started a new practice. I started putting my “pore filling” primer on top. I know that sounds nutso, but hear me out. Putting it on top stops it from getting moved around and it also retained more of that smooth silky finish that help blur that pore texture in the first place.
Here is how I do it.
I start by applying my foundation and waiting until it settles in a bit. Then with a damp makeup sponge (I’ve been using the real techniques one lately) I pick up some pore smoothing primer like Make Up For Ever Step One Smoothing Base or Benefit Porefessional and dab that in patting motions onto the areas where I feel my pores are the most prominent. If you try this, don’t even think about using any swiping or rubbing motions with that sponge or I’ll box your ears! Seriously though the dabbing motion is key otherwise you’ll just move your foundation around and make a mess.
Once it is patted on where I need it, I take the same sponge and a TINY bit of translucent setting powder and dab that on top to keep it in place. These primers don’t really tend to set on their own so this will serve just to keep it in where you need it, ya feel me? It also helps to mattify even further which is good for hiding pores as well.
I did one side of my face the old way, putting on the pore primer first, and the other side in the way I just described so that you can see up close and personal the difference it makes.
You’ll notice a few things. The first thing is that my left eyelid is way more saggy than my right, yikes. Wtf…have I been walking around this crooked forever? I’m so perturbed.
The second thing is that putting it on top really does diffuse the look of my pores quite a bit more. Pew pew, winning! Still perturbed but winning.
When you’re that close (and using a macro lens) you can still see some texture but from a distance it’s like the pores never even stood a chance…
See what I mean? What pores?
So if pore primer frustrates you because it seems like a gimmick, give it a try this way. I think you’ll see a big difference.
