When I first began doing makeup I knew that I had to invest in decent brushes, so I spent a lot of time hunting for the best brushes of all different varieties and reading reviews and researching like a madwoman and quite frankly wasting my damn time. I was pretty new to the crew and I didn’t get that I should think outside the box. What a dumdum pop. I also didn’t understand why all the lip brushes that I was buying kinda sucked. They were all too small and short. It took 87 years to fill in one lip with them, no thank you. After experimenting a little bit and figuring out what worked for me I realized that the best lip brushes in my collection were not necessarily lip brushes at all.
Years later and I’m still painting my lips with the same brushes that I found after my lip brush epiphany.

What do these brushes have in common? For starters none of them are lip brushes by name. But more importantly they all have a similar shape and size.
They are small, but the bristles aren’t super short, and they have a rounded, almost almond shaped edge. In painting that’s referred to as a filbert brush…and come to think of it you could totally look for small filbert brushes at the craft store and use them for lipstick. They are way cheaper there too, which makes me think that maybe we are getting boned by a lot of these brush companies, but I digress.
Personally, I prefer this shape for lipstick because the brush has enough body to apply a decent amount of the product to the lip, while still being small enough that you can use it to get a super crisp edge. You know I love me some crisply applied bold lips mmhmmmm.
This shape works for me because the shape rides the natural line of the lip really well, as conveniently demonstrated below.
But you can also choose to use just the very tip of it to touch up and mistakes and really get in there for some fine detail work…and it’s also large enough to spread a little color around as well. Winning on all sides my friends!
If you have found yourself searching for the best lip brushes and coming up short I highly recommend trying these brushes or something or a similar shape and size, but if that doesn’t work for you keep thinking outside of the box and trying different things. I mean if you end up using an eyeshadow blending brush to apply your lipstick it doesn’t matter as long as it works, right? Don’t try that specifically because it sounds like a huge mess but you know what I mean. ?
