Today we have the next installment in my ongoing series of eyeshadow blending tips. Blending is so important so I really like to take the time to write individual posts for each tip, and show it in depth so you can really soak it in, ya know? Soak it innnnnn, babeh. I’ll link all the past tips at the bottom of this post so in case you missed those, you can basically take the entire Quinnface eyeshadow blending course if you want.
This time it’s all about layering. When you’re working with darker colors, especially matte ones (because mattes are a motherf*cker to blend if you haven’t noticed) choosing to do many many layers of similar shades will make your job much easier. If you just pop on a ton of one or two colors and then try to spread them evenly it’s a lot harder to move them around and get an even blend. The more you work in thin layers of similar color the less likely you are to have patches and choppy edges, does that make sense? It’s sort of like frosting a cake, if you dump it all on at once, may baby jesus help you.
How many layers you ask? Quite a few. I took photos as I applied a very matte, very deep brown look so that you can see exactly what shades I applied and how many layers I did of them. All of the colors are from the Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette (which blends really nicely for mattes btw) and I circled in the photo below which shades I used. In the cases where two are circled that means that I mixed those two shades together on the brush.
Let’s have a look…
You’ll notice a few things.
- I started with the lightest shades first
- I even did two layers of the same color in a row. That’s a great way to deepen the same color after you blend it out. Layer layer layer, even with the same shade.
- The finished look has the bottom lash line blended out as well. I did the same process on the bottom lash line as I did in the crease, but with smaller brushes.
The next time you work with mattes or deep colors or any color you want to have blended to the gawddds, give this layering tip a try. And if you want to chck out the rest of my eyeshadow blending tips then follow then check out these past posts:
