Beauty Oils Demystified

If you are up on trends you may have noticed a lot of people using beauty oil for makeup application.  As in they apply the oil to their sponge or use it on their face before they begin to apply their base.  Looks easy enough right? Well yeah but there are some oils that work for makeup application and there are others that do not.

So which beauty oils work with makeup and which don’t?  It’s kind of hard to tell upon first glance honestly, but what you want to look for is something that is on the lighter side, something that absorbs into the skin easily and something that hydrates well for a plump, dewy base. I have three oils in my beauty routine.  One is obviously not for use with makeup, one looks like it could be but it doesn’t work at all and the third is absolute perfection. There’s a fine line between dewy, well blended goddess and hot, greasy mess that lives in the streets and doesn’t have access to running water… so let me show you what works for me.

  • Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil // Clearly this one doesn’t work with makeup. I mean not even close.  It’s thick, it has retinol in it and for god’s sake its blue.  It’s a great oil, but clearly not for makeup use.
  • The Body Shop Vitamin E Oil Serum // It’s thin, it’s hydrating, it’s clear….what could go wrong?  It just sits on top of the skin a bit too much and makes everything slide around. It’s a trickster, I tell ya!  It just doesn’t seem to work.  The other one was obvious but this one was sneaky.  It totally seems like something you could use with your makeup, yet it makes a mess.  Again it’s an awesome oil and I used it several times a week, but just not for makeup, no no no.
  • Korres Wild Rose Oil // Ding Ding Ding we have a winner! This is the perfect beauty oil for makeup.  I’m sure there are other great ones out there but this is the best I’ve found so far.  It’s light, it absorbs into the skin, it makes you feel plump and hydrated. The makeup sit’s beautifully on top of it and it doesn’t seem to break down any more quickly, or get greasy.  Not to mention it’s so pretty and cool looking with the bits of rose inside it.

Some of the base ingredients are apricot oil and squalene, so if you don’t want to go for this particular oil (it’s a little pricey) then look for something with similar ingredients at the top of the ingredients list.  Or try to get a deluxe sample from Sephora because that’s what I did and the sample is huge.  It’s so big I thought they made a mistake and sent me a full size product.

Personally I prefer to add just a bit of this directly onto my skin before I apply my makeup.  Some people add their oil into their foundation on the back of their hand or apply it directly to their sponge, but the good old “apply it right to your face” method seems to work best for me.

BUT all of this aside, if you are naturally really oily this method is probably not for you.  You shouldn’t avoid oils in your skincare necessarily, but why add more oil to a face that’s already self sufficient in that area?  You’re naturally dewy, just let it rock.

If you’ve been thinking about trying a little oil with your foundation, hopefully this takes some of the mystery out of it for you.  Let me know if you’ve tried it, how you do it, and what oil you like to use!
