I go through phases with nail art. There are periods of time where I do it constantly, and other times where I can’t be bothered. Either way, I’m not exactly a pro nail artist over here so when I do go for it I like to keep it pretty simple. Usually something geometric and involving tape because that’s the easiest. Which is good new for the casual observer with just wants to DIY some cool nails, ya know?
So today we have another installment of my easy metallic nail designs series, because I did this look recently and it was so simple but I got so many compliments that I just had to share. By “so many compliments” I mean that like 3 people in real life mentioned them but I mean…fingers are pretty small so for them to even notice I think is a major win.
MAJOR TIP:
If you are doing nail art with tape do it in two sessions. I like to paint my base color either the night before or in the morning and let it completely dry before I attempt the design. Not only does this make it less likely for you to jump the gun and mush your base color (which is the worst thing ever and then you have to try to paint your nail art over a lumpy base and it never ever comes out cute when that happens) but it also makes it much easier for the tape to come off cleaner and leave a really sharp line.
The tape sticks just as well on dry nails, but also comes off more easily so it makes it much easier to pull it away and get a perfect line. In the case of this pictorial I painted them the night before doing the design.
The base color I’m using is a dark gray Metallic from OPI Called No More Mr Night Sky and the Bronze is Essie Leggy Legend which is one of my favorite colors that came out this year. Scratch that, its my absolute favorite color that came out this year. I wore it at least ten times. I’m also using my current favorite top coat which I wrote a full review on because it’s amazing, and washi tape because it’s the best for nail art. You can literally do this with any color combination, and it’s the simplest ever, but layering warm and cool metallics gives it a more impactful look in my opinion. You don’t have to use these exact colors to get the same effect, so if you have something similar you can try it with that as well.
Yeah…It’s literally that simple. But look how clean the line comes out when you do it over fully dried polish. So much better than doing it all in one sitting. Plus you don’t get impatient and half ass it, ya know? I mean you still might, but I find that I’m slightly less likely to do that if I haven’t been sitting there waiting for it to dry for ages.
A FEW MORE TIPS FOR CLEAN LINES:
- Use a fresh piece of tape for each finger. Don’t try to re-use pieces even if they seem like they’ll still work. Even if it only loses a tiny bit of stickiness that can lead to some lifting, which will look small when it’s just the tape but as soon as some polish seeps under it will look messy. No bueno.
- Use one of your nails to tuck the end of the tape in at the side of each nail next to your skin. That will help to ensure that the tape is making contact all the way across the nail, so there isn’t a weird gap at the end.
- Peel the tape off when the polish is almost dry. If it’s wet it can be messy and if it’s too dry it can be hard to remove.
Simplest metallic nail design possible right? But I really hope the tips were helpful because getting the lines perfect can really help you nail it….you see what I did there? I’ll be here all week.
